I was recently commissioned to design a logo for an English conversation school in Japan.
I have documented the process below using Slidedeck a new Wordpress Plugin.
- The Brief
The brief for the logo was basic. Create a logo based on our existing logo. It should be colourful and cute and appeal to Japanese taste.

Above is a sample flyer that was provided as a guide for the design.
The key elements were the rainbow, the word Ark and the cute characters.
- The first draft
Based on doodling on my iPhone, I came up with a logo based on the letters A,R & K. The letters would suggest a face, with the smile representing the ark and the face shape formed a talking bubble to suggest the nature of the business – a conversational English language school for Japanese.

- The second draft
The first draft, although appealing was rejected because it was felt it was too difficult for Japanese people to read the English characters. Brief was now made more specific – could we have something with cute animals and a rainbow. After learning that Koalas are a favorite (no surprises there) I set about creating a cute Koala character as the central part of the new logo.

- The final design
With the Koala suitably cute enough and approved it was then just a matter of creating the other elements – rainbow, company name and URL. The initial version (top) was modified by adding the URL and repositioning the word “Ark” to the top and the finished logo was approved by the client. Another logo under the belt.
